Learning Disability,
Nursing, Health & Social Care

David Matthews has enjoyed a career spanning more than 30 years in the field of caring for people with learning disabilities, both as a practicing nurse and as a nurse educator.

For almost 20 years he has worked as a Nurse Tutor at the Lancashire College of Nursing and as Senior Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire and St Martin’s College Lancaster.

He is a regular presenter at conferences in many parts of the UK, and has a significant publishing record, being best known as the author of The ‘OK’ Health Check, and a number of Distance Learning Packages.

The importance of education and training for staff has been highlighted in a number of reports and directives from the DoH, and every care provider in the modern arena must recognise the value of high quality education and training for their staff.

David Matthews is an educator with considerable specialist experience in this field, able to provide education and training in many different formats including Direct Teaching, Supported Distance Learning and Computer Based Learning.

High quality teaching materials and learning packs can be designed and produced to dovetail with the particular needs of any organisation and staff group.

Whether you need Education and Training input for your Care Assistants to meet the demands of LDAF, or more advanced and in-depth work for professionally qualified staff, it can be provided.

Training Needs Analysis

Every organisation is different, having different priorities and driving forces. It is often beneficial to undertake some informal discussion or even a Training Needs Analysis to ensure that any education provided is exactly what you require to benefit your organisation.

Health Facilitation & Health Action Plans

Promoting the health of people with learning disability is an area of particular specialist interest supported with a background of research and publications.

The task of developing the new role for Health Facilitators demands a detailed knowledge of the issues involved, and new innovative approaches.

Independent Consultancy offers NHS Trusts and other providers the opportunity to implement these new services in a single development package which provides:

Team Building & Team Development

Experiential learning using outdoor activities as the medium for team building and team development is well established, and there is a wealth of literature available to support this approach.

David Matthews is appropriately qualified to provide outdoor experiential team building activities, using a very comfortable and well equipped residential facility in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. This facility can also be made available as a ‘time-out’ venue conducive to team development work not involving outdoor activity.
